Happy New Year!!!

Almost half of us make them yet less than one in ten succeed. New Year’s resolutions have a long history, with the ancient Babylonians credited with the first ones some 4,000 years ago as they resolved each mid-March (when their new year began to coincide with when crops were planted) to return borrowed farm equipment to medieval knights who would renew their vow to chivalry. Adopted by the ancient Romans, the timing shifted to January 1st in 46 B.C. as the month of January was named for the two-faced Roman god, Janus, who looks forward to new beginnings as well as backward for reflection and resolution.

Even outside the historical context, the beginning of a new year feels a natural time to reflect on how the last year has gone and to set resolutions for a better year ahead. Traditionally, most resolutions relate to self-improvement (lose weight, quit a bad habit etc.), but what if for 2025 the focus shifted to setting intentions vs. achieving goals. In other words, making resolutions about who you want to be in the present moment and how you want to show up in your life. In this way, your focus is on your values—what is important to you in all areas of your life from physical and mental health to your relationships and career. Of course, goals are important because they are about what we do, but perhaps setting powerful intentions will empower us to set and achieve goals.
